The New Hampshire State Archives holds the vital record cards in its' Genealogy Research Room at the State Office Park on Fruit Street in Concord, New Hampshire.

In 1866 a law was passed which began statewide vital records reporting. All towns began reporting during the 1880s, but even then copies were not always sent to the secretary of state. Regular statewide recording only occurred after 1905 when the Bureau of Vital Records was established, but towns did not always send copies of all pre-1905 records. If you do not find the vital record you seek in the state collection, check with the town clerk.[1]

You can still take a trip to Concord or hire a genealogist to physically search the cards or you can search them online at FamilySearch.org or Ancestry.com.

Birth records more than 100 years old and death, marriage and divorce records more than 50 years old are all in the public domain. Adult adoptees may request a copy of their original, unedited birth certificate. If you need to request a copy, the state's fee is currently $15.00. The fee covers both the search and the certificate and is not refunded if a record is not located.[2]

They are not currently indexed, but you can first narrow by year and then by surname. Simply page through the images of the alphabetical cards to find your ancestor.

This webpage also provides a link to Ayling's Soldiers and Sailors, a New Hampshire Civil War resource.

Volumes 14 through 17 of the State Papers series contain the Rolls of the Soldiers of the Revolutionary War. All four volumes were compiled and edited by Isaac W. Hammond, A.M., who was president of the New Hampshire Antiquarian Society and a member of the New Hampshire Historical Society. The volumes were published by the authority of the New Hampshire legislature.

If your revolutionary era ancestor served during the War of the Rebellion, be sure to check these volumes for their names, leaders, regiments and home towns.

Have you read the Record?
The New Hampshire Genealogical Record is an underused resource for genealogical and historical research and it is available online! Contents include church records; birth, marriage, and death records; cemetery inscriptions; family histories and more. If you have ancestors, who were living in New Hampshire anytime from the 1600s through the 19th century, you must read the Record.

Where can I find the Record?
Access the first six volumes online through the University of New Hampshire library. Alternatively, you can read and search these volumes on the Internet Archive. The search engine at the Allen County Public Library makes it easy to locate the correct files on the Internet Archive. Do you prefer to read the physical books and are in the Seacoast New Hampshire area? Head over to the Dimond Library at the University of New Hampshire.

How can I find my relatives in the Record?
Below you will find links to the genealogical records of interest in Volume I for towns in Rockingham County as well as nearby Dover, NH. These links will open the book in the Internet Archive online reader, which sports a nifty search inside box in the upper right hand corner. You also have the option of downloading and saving a pdf version. To search within a pdf version or any web page (from a pc), hit Control-F and enter your surname or subject of interest.

Think Outside the GenBox!
When searching, don't just search for your surnames and variations. Search for street names, occupations or religious institutions. Search for a year without a name and with an event, like marriage. Stretch your searching skills and see how creative you can be! Don't forget to record the searches you have done, so you don't have to repeat them in a few years. Excel or any spreadsheet program is useful for tracking your searches.
